The concern for the academic success has been raised by the Danang College of Foreign Languages (CFL) due to students’ necessary level of academic language proficiency to complete their courses. This study investigates the appropriateness of the Test of Academic Literacy Levels (TALL) in measuring the academic literacy (AL) of Vietnamese first-year undergraduates whose major is English. The tests were piloted on 197 students under standardized testing conditions. Using item analyses and descriptive statistics will help us compare their test scores with those of students at the University of Pretoria at which TALL is used as a placement test to assess AL of new entrants to the university. Accordingly, some recommendations will be suggested to make the test more appropriate for students of the CFL based on the results of the test, item and factor analyses.
